Brief History

TPC 40th Anniversary Photo 2007

A BRIEF HISTORY OF TRIANGLE PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH From 1967-2003

  • 1966: 7 acres purchased from Durham County Board of Education near the corner of Highways 54 and 55 in southern Durham
  • March 5, 1967: Dr. I.M. Bagnal conducts the first worship service at Lowes Grove Elementary School .
  • September 10, 1967: Granville Presbytery officially recognizes Triangle Presbyterian Church with a charter membership of thirty-one.
  • May 1969: The church begins to build the multipurpose sanctuary/fellowship hall where the small congregation would worship for the next seventeen years.
  • February 1986: Developers of the Park Forty Office Plaza buy the property, now greatly increased in market value by the construction of I-40.
A Story of God's Faithfulness

The proceeds of the sale presented a responsibility and a great opportunity to the small (about 70 members) congregation. With faith and foresight, the church bought nearly six acres at the corner of Highway 54 and Tudor Place, four miles west of the old location, and built a much larger facility totally debt-free. The congregation moved into the new building and held the first worship service on October 11, 1987. The new facility, containing a sanctuary, fellowship hall, offices and educational space was dedicated to the glory of God on December 6, 1987 during the 20th anniversary year of the Triangle congregation. Although the new building could accommodate a congregation three times larger, the church quickly outgrew it. In 1993 the congregation participated in a capital fund campaign which resulted in major additions to the sanctuary and Christian education space. This addition was dedicated to God's service on June 4, 1995.

The membership has now grown to over 675 people who worship at two services each Sunday. Growth of all areas of the church's life has accompanied this membership increase, resulting in an active Sunday School, men's and women's organizations, youth fellowships, older adult fellowship, and a singles group, just to name a few. These followers of Jesus Christ worship and serve God in the Durham community and throughout the world through mission and service efforts. With a commitment to the Lord Jesus Christ and the authority of Scripture, this church offers an evangelical witness for the Presbyterian Church (U.S.A.) to the people of southwest Durham County.

During its 30 years of ministry, Triangle Presbyterian Church has been served by five pastors. The Rev. Herman J. Womeldorf, the organizing pastor, served from 1967-1972. He was succeeded by the Rev. Joseph A. Greer during 1973-1976. The Rev. Al Dimmock served the congregation in 1977-78. The Rev. Lee Adkins, who retired in December 1986, served Triangle from 1979-1986. The current pastor, L. Raymond Cobb, II, was called and began service in August of 1987. The church has been served by two former Associate Pastors, David F. Crow and Steve D. Braswell. Currently, Jeff Spainhour, who began at TPC in 2003, serves as Associate Pastor of Youth and Family Ministry. In 2005, Janise Matyas Smith began her service as Associate Pastor of Spiritual Growth and Discipleship.
